Mitt Romney accidentally releases victory website after losing election
mitt

One of the Republican candidate's staffers accidentally leaking the link to the transition website that they set up for if Romney had won. The homepage of the site has a seal of 'The Office of the President Elect' and had a quote on the top signed by President-Elect Mitt Romney. It shows links to information about the would-be inauguration (taking place in Washington, DC on January 21, 2013) and his vision of a 'smaller, simpler, smarter' America.

The Amerindians

Their legends say that they were created from earth, water and stars. DNA says they came from Siberia to what is now Alaska, Canada and US, through a land bridge called Behringia, about 15,000 years ago. Older western movies depicted them as wild and cruel. But in fact, they were victims of the intrusion in their territory of the greediest predator they ever faced: the White Man.

The Native Americans were often called Red Skins. The name traces its roots in Columbus' voyages, when the navigator met the Caribbean natives with an odd red color of the skin. This was due to the ochre they used to slosh their face and body. This misconception was then applied to all indigenous of the Americas, even if the habit is not employed by the natives of North America. In change, some tribes in South America still practice it. Later, the native Americans were named Amerindians, a proper name.

African slaves

Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco. Slavery was practiced throughout the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries, and African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 solidified the central importance of slavery to the South's economy. By the mid-19th century, America's westward expansion, along with a growing abolition movement in the North, would provoke a great debate over slavery that would tear the nation apart in the bloody American Civil War (1861-65). Though the Union victory freed the nation's 4 million slaves, the legacy of slavery continued to influence American history, from the tumultuous years of Reconstruction (1865-77) to the civil rights movement that emerged in the 1960s, a century after emancipation.

Ex-cop seeks new judge for retrial over shooting

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A former New Orleans police officer has asked a federal judge to disqualify himself from presiding over his retrial on charges he fatally shot a man without justification in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath before the man's body was burned in a car.

A court filing Monday by lawyers for the former officer, David Warren, says U.S. District Judge Lance Africk made comments on the case that could call his impartiality into question.

During Warren's sentencing, Africk said Warren's testimony about his shooting of 31-year-old Henry Glover was "contrived and fabricated" and commended prosecutors for "unmasking (his) deceit."

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new trial for Warren last month, ruling that Africk should have separated his trial from four other officers charged in Glover's 2005 death.

Alabama FINALLY pardons the 'Scottsboro Boys'... 82-years after they were falsely convicted of raping two white women

On the 45th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. new legislation is set to be passed that would pardon the Scottsboro Boys - nine black teenagers falsely convicted of raping two white women in 1931.

The bill which was presented to the Alabama House today, passed 103-0 to applause from the chamber and Governor Robert Bentley has already said that he will approve the measure which passed through the state senate unanimously.

The youths, from Tennessee and Georgia, were accused of gang-raping the two women aboard a freight train in Alabama on March 25, 1931.

The Scottsboro Boys: From left to right, the accused are: Clarence Norris, Olen Montgomery, Andy Wright, Willie Roberson, Ozie Powell, Eugene Williams, Charlie Weems, Roy Wright, and Haywood Patterson

All but the youngest defendant were convicted by all-white juries in the town of Scottsboro and quickly sentenced to death - the false charges helped spur the modern civil rights movement.

Their subsequent legal journey to fight the convictions and win new trials sparked protests over racial injustice and two landmark rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court. Their struggles also inspired a Broadway musical, books and television movies.

Though one of the women recanted her rape allegations, the convictions against five of the teens were ultimately upheld, and everyone in the group served at least several years in prison before being released.
