Hi All... thanks for all the posts with regards to 'A-Z of Health'.  Some extremely interesting posts with regards to the topic of depression, and also OCD - both illnesses which I feel very passionately about in the respect that they should not be ignored. Whether you have suffered yourself, or have lived with someone who has been a sufferer, depression can be a fatal illness and deserves to be recognised as the serious illness that it is.

Steeleyma, glad you liked my pregnancy timeline post.  As you're all probably aware (or you may not be), Admin hasn't been about for a while, as my own health has been a little up and down, although not in a bad way! There is a baby Admin on the way (), and whilst this hasn't impaired my ability to type or use a PC, it has completely fogged my brain, and my ability to string a coherent sentence together.

I believe it's called 'Baby Brain', and to say that I'm even struggling to read the captions in 'Hello' magazine, never mind all the complicated stuff on here, would be an understatement! So I've been staying away from scary stuff, i.e, paragraphs etc, for a while.  However, not to be deterred, you'll now understand why, if indeed I do, start spouting quite literally, a load of rubbish, whilst trying to appear very intellectual...

On that note, I shall continue on my intellectual way.

BIPOLAR GENE...

SCIENTISTS have discovered a gene linked to depression and manic depression (bipolar disorder) which could lead to new treatment for the mental illnesses.

Comedian Stephen Fry revealed his experience of bipolar disorder in a recent BBC TV documentary. Sufferers experience extreme mood swings from feelings of hopelessness to manic highs.

A joint British and Danish research team have identified the gene from a study of families. It appears to be present in about one in 10 of bipolar cases.

Depression 'can affect anybody'
Campaign poster
Depression affects one in every five people at some time in their lives
A mental health campaign is warning that depression can affect anyone at any time.

NHS Lothian has teamed up with Edinburgh University and mental health charity Depression Alliance Scotland at the start of Mental Health Week.

It aims to raise awareness and broaden options for people living in Edinburgh and the Lothians with depression.

The Lothian Alliance Against Depression (LAAD) group will be officially launched on Wednesday.

'Sadness and despair'

The key message of the campaign entitled "Mother, father, son, daughter..." is that depression can affect anyone at any time.

Posters with this message can be seen on buses and in community settings.

There will also be presentations and examples of community-based approaches to the management of depression in the Lothians.

Depression in Scotland is a common medical condition, which often leads to intense feelings of sadness and despair, and affects one in every five people at some time in their lives.

Depression is a very common illness, but unlike other common illnesses, such as asthma or diabetes, depression has a stigma attached to it which prevents many people with depression from seeking help
Ilena Day
Depression Alliance Scotland

In Edinburgh and the Lothians it is one of the most common reasons for people to visit their GP, but it is estimated that as many as 75% of people with depression do not seek help from their doctor.

Linda Irvine, NHS Lothian mental health strategic programme manager, said: "I am very excited about NHS Lothian becoming part of this European-wide project.

"I believe this awareness-raising campaign will attempt to change ingrained attitudes to depression, which is a common and generally treatable illness but is often under reported due to the stigma attached to it."

Ilena Day, chief executive for Depression Alliance Scotland, said: "Depression is a very common illness, but unlike other common illnesses, such as asthma or diabetes, depression has a stigma attached to it which prevents many people with depression from seeking help."

LAAD is also a partner in the European Alliance Against Depression, a project funded by the European Commission, which includes 18 European regions working together to share information to improve treatment and reduce stigma.

Bilko never realised Admin was in the family way. I was wondering why i hadnt seen any posts from her recently (must have missed this thread). Would be pleased if Admin or H6 could pass on the Bilksters good wishes to Admin and Mr Admin. My own daughter is expecting a new arrival herself in December so am well aware of this 'Baby Brain' thing. Bilko

PS. Admin2 could it be possible that all three 'wise' monkeys are pregnant also? Ye know, bearing in mind that Baby Brain thingy.....It would explain a lot.  Bilko

Bilko is this a medical term or a woman's thing that is generally used to explain forgetfulness when a woman is pregnant?

I have done an archive search and cant find it except in cases of infant development.

I will pass on your regards to Admin when I next see her

Spot on again Bilkster....as I called a friend who explained it is a metaphor to do with hormonal imbalance that takes place during pregnancy.....and since neither Ma nor Kano are pregnant(perhaps I am wrong) then they do have the latter stages of BB = BOOT BOLLOCKS if they get a hold of us at the forthcoming venue.
