Global warming nears ‘dangerous’ level

Researchers say average temperatures are close to a million-year high

Global temperatures are dangerously close to the highest ever estimated to have occurred in the past million years, scientists reported Monday.

In a study that analyzed temperatures around the globe, researchers found that Earth has been warming rapidly, nearly 0.36 degrees Fahrenheit (0.2 degrees Celsius) in the last 30 years.

"The average surface temperature is 15, maybe 16 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit)," said Alan Robock, a meteorologist and climate researcher from Rutgers University who was not involved with the study.

If global temperatures go up another 1.8 degrees F (1 degree C), it would be equal to the maximum temperature of the past million years.

"This evidence implies that we are getting close to dangerous levels of human-made (anthropogenic) pollution," said study leader James Hansen of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

‘A different planet...’
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, human-caused greenhouse gases are responsible for most of the warming of the last 50 years. The gases, released by burning of fossil fuels and land clearing, among other factors, trap heat in the atmosphere and warm Earth's surface.

Further global warming of 1.8 degrees F (1 degree C) defines a critical level, Hanson said.

Data on global land-ocean temperature anomalies indicate that Earth has been warming approximately 0.36 Fahrenheit (0.2 degrees Celsius) per decade for the past 30 years. This rapid warming has brought global temperature to within about 1.8 degrees F (1 degree C) of the maximum estimated temperature during the past million years.

Robock agrees that temperatures are getting up there.

"It's certainly the warmest it's been in the last couple of thousand years," Robock said. "I don't have access to the data about the last million years but it's probably right. I just haven't looked at it in detail.

"During the warmest interglacial periods the Earth was reasonably similar to today. But if further global warming reaches 2 or 3 degrees Celsius, we will likely see changes that make Earth a different planet than the one we know," he said. "The last time it was that warm was in the middle Pliocene, about 3 million years ago, when sea level was estimated to have been about 25 meters [80 feet] higher than today."

The study also notes that global warming is greatest at higher latitudes near the poles. This is because when Earth warms, snow and ice melt, uncovering darker land and ocean surfaces. Instead of the once-white surface that reflected solar rays back into space, the darker surfaces now absorb more energy from the sun.

Mass migration
Although warming is most noticeable at the poles, higher latitudes are still among the coolest spots around. For animals and plants that can survive only within certain cool temperature ranges, these are the only places to go as their current homes become intolerably warm.

In a 2003 study, scientists showed that 1,700 plant and animal species migrated toward the poles at about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) per decade in the last 50 years.

That migration rate is not fast enough to keep up with the current rate of movement of a given temperature zone, which has reached about 25 miles (40 kilometers) per decade in the period 1975 to 2005, Hanson and co-authors write in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Rapid movement of climatic zones is going to be another stress on wildlife," Hansen said. "It adds to the stress of habitat loss due to human developments. If we do not slow down the rate of global warming, many species are likely to become extinct. In effect we are pushing them off the planet."

When looking back at the past, most people consider their parents and grandparents as influential people in helping mold their lives. For some it would be other significant adults like an aunt, uncle, a foster parent, or a day care provider.

Each one of us can probably tell a story or two about things that went awry (went wrong) when we were kids, things that we promised we would never do if we became parents. Hopefully, the majority of readers were not in abusive and/or neglectful situations. But some, no doubt, some were abused and/or neglected. The majority of parents truly want the best for their children and want to do the best job of parenting as is humanly possible. The majority of parents have no intention of inflicting harm or being abusive or neglectful to their children. But, even when there is no intent to harm, all parents make mistakes. Thankfully, we can learn and grow from our mistakes.

Our past is a precious part of who we are today but it doesn't have to dictate who we are. In other words, we can use the past (both good and bad experiences) to build on and strengthen our character. Each of us has many competencies. Our past has helped to build those competencies that we are able to utilize today. We can learn from the past. The past is a valuable 'stepping stone' because it helps us understand who we are, to apply what skills we have today, use our knowledge as a catalyst for growth and change, and look with hope to the future.

We are blessed if the memories of the past are 'basically' good memories. Yet it can be extremely difficult if past memories are hurtful. However, no matter what the past holds, individuals can take past experiences and use them to their best advantage today.

AFTER DOING A DISSERTATION ON RENEWABLE ENERGY AT UNI, I DISCOVERED JUST HOW IMPORTANT EDUCATING SOCIETY IN THE DANGERS OF CARBON EMITTING PRODUCTS REALY WAS, IE- COAL, OIL, PETROL. WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DONT KNOW IS THAT PRODUCING ELECTRICITY FOR THE HOME IS STILL DONE BY BURNING COAL, THIS IS BY FAR THE BIGGEST CARBON EMITTER ON THE PLANET.I ALSO LEANED THAT WHAT IS EVEN MORE IMPOTANT IS EDUCATING THE PEOPLE THAT THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES TO BURNING COAL TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY FOR THIER HOMES, IN THE FORM OF SOLAR WIND AND HYDROGEN.WHAT I CANNOT UNDERSTAND IS WHY THE GOVERNMENTS ARE NOT USING MORE PROPAGANDA TO ADVERTISE THESE PRODUCTS, OR , INCOURAGING BANKS TO GIVE LOW FIXED RATE LOANS TO BUY THESE NEW PRODUCTS THAT ARE READILY AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. EACH DETACHED OR SEMIDETACHED HOUSEHOLD COULD  HAVE RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTS POWERING UP THIER HOMES AND VEHICLES, RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW, BUT NO ADVERTISING MEANS NO SALES.tHE GOVERNMENTS ARE NOT DOING ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE NEW FOUND NEEDS OF SOCIETY, ALL THEY ARE INTERESTED IN IS GETTING THEIR PARTY INTO POWER AND GETTING INTO POWER TO GET A BIG FAT PAY-CHECK AND WHAT THEY SEEM O THINK IS POWER, BOLLOX TO THE LOT OF THEM, SELF INDULGENT IGNORRANT MOTHERS C*NTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Very F*****G ANGRY:

So the parents are to blame instead of these F*****G MONSTERS?

Sorry folks but this one does not sit well with me and I am sure any decent caring parent will be absolutely furious when they read this next news item...

from an alleged EXPERT.

How anyone can morally cover up for pedophiles is beyond belief then try and blame the parents........perhaps this quack is one himself!!!!!!!!!

Expert: paedophile fear makes children fat

KATE FOSTER CHIEF REPORTER

SCOTTISH parents are harming their children by overestimating the risk from paedophiles, the nation's leading public health expert has claimed.

Dr Laurence Gruer urged parents to be "realistic" about the risk posed by sex attackers and murderers, and to let children play outside so that they get enough exercise.

Gruer, director of public health science at NHS Health Scotland, said children living in cities were often left with little option but to watch television and play on computers because their lives were so restricted.

But while some health campaigners welcomed his comments and called on families to give their children greater freedom, critics said parents were right to worry about the safety of their children while paedophiles lived anonymously in communities.

Gruer said: "Taking exercise is incredibly important for children, not just to avoid weight gain, but for the development of their bones, muscles and heart.

"It is also important for learning how to use their body and doing things with other kids. The inactivity that kids are suffering from is bad news from a lot of different points of view."

Gruer said this was often difficult to achieve because of the lifestyles families lead, particularly in cities.

He said: "They are taken to nursery and taken to school. They are not allowed to run around as they used to and when you are in the home there are various things like TVs and computers you are attracted to, to sit around and watch.

"Now, we are all concerned about the possibility of paedophiles getting hold of them or something else bad happening, so there's a tendency to keep kids inside and under supervision.

"I think it's unfortunate. As a parent you tend to overestimate certain risks. There are not any more children murdered now than there used to be, but the ones that occur get such publicity it leaves the impression there's a real risk to every child."

Gruer said there had been a reduction in road accidents and "part of that is parents not letting children out".

He added: "Society can help by creating environments where children can play safely. The message is that it makes sense for you to assess the risks as realistically as possible and do all you can to enable your child to be active both at home and outside."

But parents said that many families could not help but worry about the dangers to their children from all types of crime.

Eileen McCloy, spokeswoman for the parents' rights group Not With My Child, said: "It is very dangerous out there and parents do worry about their children - you worry about them all the time. You worry about being assaulted, about someone stealing their trainers or their phone. Parents are right to be concerned."

Child abductions and murders by strangers are so rare that when they occur they attract huge publicity.

Recent Scottish tragedies have included the murder of 11-year-old Rory Blackhall in Livingston and that of eight-year-old Mark Cummings in the Royston area of Glasgow. But last year there were 360 children killed or seriously injured on the roads. A total of 226 died in accidents in their homes.

And there is little doubt many Scottish youngsters lead unhealthy lifestyles.

Recent figures suggest a third of 12-year-olds in Scotland are overweight, and one in five is clinically obese.

One in three primary school-aged girls and one in four primary school-aged boys does not achieve the minimum levels of physical activity.

Helena Wray, spokeswoman for Family and Youth Concern, said: "There are risks associated with almost everything in life, but unfortunately a few high-profile cases have given the impression that the danger of being abducted by a paedophile is far greater than it really is.

"It is important for a child's health and the development of their independence to have a measure of freedom outdoors, and by keeping children indoors, parents are exposing them to other risks such as inactivity and obesity."

Absolutely on the mark Linda........Children are our future to a better place and a safer environment.....This idea of pampering the vile creatures makes me want to be a vigilante and get the F******S myself.

I would take great pleasure in cutting their B***S of very slowly....then let the women in to finish the monsters off...not pander to them like they were human beings........they are sick F*****S who need taken out or kept out of society for life!.

So what about the kids frame of mind when something that awful happens? are they just left to get on with life? Also what about the parents?....Give me Natural justice for these vermin and make them suffer 100 times more than their innocent victims who have been robbed of a life.

we can only imagine what it would be like if it happened to our own so there is no difference as we all fell the pain and so should these B******S...or perhaps the judges are into that too as they seem to hand down very light sentences compared to a robber or drug dealer!

Hi Linda A2....agree with both of you when they go into prison they are protected when they come out they are protected i think human rights goes a bit to far with this one as they shouldnt be allowed them.

What about the kids rights?

A2 i believe street justice should be allowed for this kinda thing as we all know they would NEVER have the capability to do it again!!

Hi ALL,

This is a very sensitive subject and we have our own views in which we would deal with matters.

There is a danger though that the VIGILANTE approach would see the relations of the victims getting a far bigger sentence than the sex offenders.

What about the children's human rights or that of the parents?

Those responsible for this heinous behavior have been getting pampered for far too long.

It is the law makers who decide their fate when convicted and have far more support than your run of the mill criminal could ever dream of.

That in itself shows just how perverse our system is when dealing direct with sexual predators.

Keep the kids safe 24/7 as they are the key to our lives and without them we become nothing but old folk waiting to meet our maker.

Our Grandchildren are also the key to our everlasting joy in life and we must do whatever we think best for all of them.

As for this imbecile who claimed parents are to blame------------------ get it right before people take matters into their own hands.
