Actor Paul Brannigan backs women's rehab centre

The centre aims to help women
keep their children out of care

A rehab centre for pregnant addicts has been launched in Glasgow with the support of Scottish actor Paul Brannigan, who beat his own addictions.

The star of Ken Loach's film The Angels' Share has opened the The Aberlour Family Support Service.

The centre offers addict mothers and expectant-mothers from across Scotland purpose-built rehabilitation accommodation in Glasgow's east end.

It aims to help women beat their problems and keep children out of care.

Mr Brannigan was imprisoned in his teens for a firearm offence and has battled addiction.

The Angels' Share tells the story of a jobless young jailbird who resolves to change his life after becoming a father and the actor described the film as "like a mirror image to my life".

It won the Jury Prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was in the running for the prestigious Palme d'Or.

Mr Brannigan helped dedicate a "recovery tree" in the grounds of the new Aberlour facility to commemorate its launch.

'I would be dead'

Aberlour Chief Executive Ken Dunbar said: "This really is a proud moment for Aberlour, as it stretches the boundaries of our work once again.

Paul Brannigan made his acting breakthrough in The Angels' Share

"Aberlour has a history of working in some of the most challenging areas because deep down in our hearts we know that everyone has the potential for growth and change."

One former resident said: "I came straight from a woman's hostel and I had a lot of problems and addictions.

"I was also pregnant and in an abusive relationship so this was my chance to get in here without him not knowing. Aberlour is the only place that has worked for me.

"If it wasn't for Aberlour I would be in prison or dead, but now I have the chance to have a life with my son and be happy."

Knife crime jail terms to increase in Scotland

There are fewer weapons on Scotland's streets compared to a few years ago, ministers said

The maximum jail term for carrying a knife in Scotland will increase from four to five years, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has announced.

He said the move sent a strong message that "knives cost lives".

Mr MacAskill also announced a crackdown on people released from prison who commit more crime before their original sentence has ended.

Ministers will introduce new laws to clarify court powers to impose consecutive sentences.

Mr MacAskill said the government was trying to tackle Scotland's problem with knife crime by tough enforcement on the streets, backed by education.

"The message I'd send out today is that knives cost lives, the consequences can be devastating and carrying a knife is just not worth the risk," he said.

"Our police forces are carrying out a record number of stop and searches on the streets and being caught with a knife could now land you a five year prison sentence."

The justice secretary said violent crime was at a 30-year low, there were 44% fewer weapons on the streets since 2006-07 and recorded crimes and offences committed by young people were down by 37% since 2007-08.

Det Ch Supt John Carnochan, of the Strathclyde Police violence reduction unit, said: "Prevention is undoubtedly better than cure when it comes to violence - we need to try and stop the drama before it becomes a crisis, help people understand that carrying weapons and using violence to resolve conflict is wrong long before the police, the courts, the justice system have to get involved.

"However, there will always be some people who just need locking up, and today's announcement sends the clear message that knife carrying is unacceptable and those who think otherwise will be punished."

Ministers plan to make the changes under proposed criminal justice legislation, to be introduced to parliament next year.

Unruly youngsters will be sent to ‘boot camps’ staffed by former soldiers to teach them self-discipline, ministers will announce today.

Hundreds of troubled teenagers will tackle military-style assault courses and team-building exercises in an attempt to raise their motivation to succeed in the classroom.

Education Secretary Michael Gove announced £1.9million funding to draft battle-hardened troops into four projects aimed at pupils who have been expelled from school or are on the brink of exclusion.

One in 20 children aged 11 have admitted to taking drugs with an estimated 30,000 of them to have taken substances in the past year.

Alarming figures show a quarter of children aged 11 to 15 have been tempted with drugs and one in six has taken them.

The drugs not only include cannabis and 'volatile' substances such as glue and aerosols but also Class A drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy and magic mushrooms.

Shocking: Figures show one in six children aged between 11 to 15 have taken drugs

One in ten children aged 11 has been offered drugs, according to a report by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction.

Campaigners have warned of the danger of a new generation of drug users whose health could be damaged in the future.

THOSE among us whose teeth are lengthening are quick to blame the younger generation for the sharp deterioration in what we call "standards".

The kids nowadays, we moan, don't respect anything or anyone any more, as we come over all misty eyed and nostalgic about the time parkies, janitors, hospital matrons and the tawse ruled our world, when drugs meant penicillin and PC 49 on his bike solved every crime.

Conveniently forgetting, of course, those vast acres of carpet under which we swept our considerable dirt.

We should never forget that behind those closed front doors with their well- scrubbed doorsteps, wives were beaten and children abused.

Nor was our deference to and blind faith in the institutions which were our rocks, those to whom we looked up - the churches, the professions, parliament and the monarchy - necessarily a good thing.

Because they have all, one after another, let us down and, if our children no longer respect them, who can blame them?

Respect, above everything, has to be earned.

Being harassed by cyber-bullies is children's biggest fear when they use the Internet

  • Online bullying is the thing most children now fear while surfing the Internet
  • A survey found a third had found something upsetting online
  • Researchers call for greater protections for vulnerable web users

Amanda Todd, who killed herself in October after enduring years of cyber-bullying. Children say online trolls are their biggest Internet fear

Being the victim of internet trolls is now British children's biggest online fear, a study found yesterday.

The survey of more than 24,000 youngsters found that a third have come into contact with something that worries or upsets them online.

Being bullied - or trolled - is the aspect most children would want to change about the internet.

The study was commissioned for the annual Safer Internet Day, which raises awareness of online issues and aims to make the internet a safer place.

Researchers reckon the results indicate that better regulation and 'safe zones' are necessary to protect our children online.

Internet usage is increasing all the time, and an estimated 86 per cent of seven to 19-year-olds use sites like Facebook and Twitter, and programs like Skype, to keep in touch with pals.

But cruel comments and gossip was the major reason cited why children would not enjoy their time online, with more than 40 per cent of children saying they had been the subject of upsetting comments or gossip.

Tributes flooded in worldwide for tragic 15-year-old Canadian Amanda Todd, who killed herself after being bullied online.

The teen took her own life after being coerced into exposing her breasts during a webcam chat, which were then used by sick trolls to blackmail her into doing more.

Tragic Amanda uploaded a video to YouTube describing years of bullying that she said drove her to drugs and alcohol.

Tom McLenachan, 28, was both an internet troll and a victim of cyber-bullying when he was a teen.

The linguist, from Bolton, Lancashire, said: 'After school, we all used to go online and chat with each other.

Anguish: A third of youngsters have come across something upsetting online

'If there was someone I didn't like, or they did something stupid at school that day, I'd post hurtful messages on their MySpace page or send them mean messages on MSN.

'People used to do it to me too, so I thought it was only fair to pass on the hurt and pain I felt.'

He added: 'I'm glad a charity is working to make the internet a safer place for children.

Is this the list of suspected Paedophiles In Government, passed on by Philip Schofield to David Cameron?

Do you think that possibly there is a huge cover up going on including by the Government, the Police the Courts and even Social Services?

If anyone is in doubt about the likelyhood of our 'Lords and Masters' being closely involved in these matters, perhaps they might care to visit the website of David Icke.

Icke has publicly (on National Radio ie: Russell Brand program) and in his books and, on his website, given details (names) of some very famous people who he says are or have been involved in Paedophilia. One past American president is named also, and some of our most recent 'New Labour' politicians. Perversion and corruption is not the exclusive domain of the Conservatives by any means.

As Icke quite rightly says - if those he has named are not guilty, they are at liberty to sue him for defamation. These details have been available freely for some years now, but it's rather odd, that none of the 'names' have sought to clear those accusations.

Whilst the mainstream media have sought to denigrate Icke over the years, it's been a good way of diverting attention from the truth perhaps ?

Wake up people !

Al Qaeda's boy commandos: Children as young as FIVE show off their horrifying arsenal of weapons at terror training camp

  • Youngsters filmed using pistols, AK-47 assault rifles and machine guns
  • Many are orphans of Al Qaeda's 'martyrs' who have died in terror attacks
  • Drilled by Turkistan Islamic Party, which trains insurgents to fight alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan
  • Group behind hundreds of terror atrocities worldwide in past 20 years

They are barely bigger than the assault rifles they grasp clumsily in their hands.

Yet these children are being trained to become the next generation of terrorists from the age of just five.

Sitting in long lines as if on a school outing, they struggle to lift deadly AK-47s as they are made to fire off a flurry of rounds, their tiny bodies getting knocked back by the recoil.

Others grapple with pistols as they are brainwashed into waging Jihad on the West and becoming suicide bombers.
