Fury in Mexico as brave activist mother who lost her daughter in drugs war is gunned down while demanding justice

A mother who waged a two-year battle to bring her daughter's killer to justice was shot to death, possibly by the same man suspected of murdering her teenager.

A security video recording shows masked men pulling up in a car in front of the governor's office in the northern city of Chihuahua.

One appeared to exchange words with anti-crime crusader Marisela Escobedo Ortiz, who was holding a vigil outside.

She tried to flee by running across the street, but the gunman chased her down and shot her in the head late Thursday, said Jorge Gonzalez, special state prosecutor for crime prevention.

Ms Escobedo was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she died within minutes.

On Friday, a group of demonstrators gathered outside the Interior Department in Mexico City to protest the killing, briefly scuffling with police while chanting 'Not one more death'.

And far to the north in Ciudad Juarez, where Ms Escobedo's 17-year-old daughter's burned and dismembered remains were found in a rubbish bin in June 2009, activists protested outside the state prosecutors office with signs demanding 'Justice for Marisela'.

Thursday's killing 'shows that in Mexico it is the victim who suffers, without protection,' veteran anti-crime activist Alejandro Marti said.

The scandal resulted in the suspension of three judges who had ordered the release of the main suspect in the daughter's killing after he was absolved by a court in April for lack of evidence.

That man, Sergio Barraza, is now a chief suspect in the mother's death, said Carlos Gonzalez, a spokesman for the attorney general's office in Chihuahua state, where Ciudad Juarez is located.

Ms Escobedo's daughter, Rubi Frayre Escobedo, disappeared in Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas, in 2008.

Far more deadly than any James Bond villain, Mexican drug cartel leader Ramiro Pozos Gonzalez stands in front of his gold plated AK-47 rifle after his arrest by police yesterday.

Defiantly posing with his thumbs up and smiling for the cameras, the capture of the La Resistencia founder is a coup for Mexican police who have struggled to deal with the rabid rise of drug related violence since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the cartels in 2006.

The triumphant Mexican counter-narcotics Police Chief Ramon Eduardo Pequeno said that 42-year-old Pozos had formerly been a member of the Milenio drug cartel in the south of the country before leaving to found the La Resistencia group in 2010.

They got her in the end: Mexico's fearless woman mayor who survived two drug gang assassination attempts is beaten to death and dumped by the roadside

Sickening: Dr Gorrostieta shows the wounds she sustained from the ambushers' gunfire and the subsequent car crash

Gorrostieta was born in 1976 and graduated in medicine from a university in the city of Morelia.

She was elected mayor of Tiquicheo in 2008 and served until 2011. During that time she defected from the Institutional Revolutionary party to the left-wing Democratic Revolution party.

In January 2009 her husband Jose Sanchez Chavez was set upon by an armed group but escaped

In October that year Maria was attacked while she was with her husband as they drove along in El Limone. Jose died that day from gunshot wounds. Maria survived but was taken to a hospital in Morelia, the state capital.

On January 23, 2010, she was attacked by men with machine guns in Ciudad Altamirano Guerrero, on her way to an event at the City Hall. She was severely injured after being hit by three bullets, as well as receiving wounds in the crash after the shooting, and had to use a colostomy bag. She said her wounds left her in constant pain.

On Saturday November 17 her body was found by farm workers from San Juan Tararameo, Cuitzeo Township, who were heading to work. She was discovered on the property known as El Chupadero. The next day she was identified by members of her family.

Musicians caught up in Mexico's drug wars

When authorities turned up, the bar where Kombo Kolombia had been booked to play was deserted

The violent deaths of all but one member of a musical band in northern Mexico have thrown a spotlight on the murky world of musicians who play for the country's drug gangs, says the BBC's Will Grant in Mexico City.

When the families and the authorities arrived at the scene of the party in the northern Mexican town of Hidalgo, they found it deserted.

There were bottles of beer and whisky strewn around on the ground, and the cars belonging to members of the musical band, Kombo Kolombia, had been left open and abandoned.

But there was no sign of the missing musicians.

The men's bodies began to turn up a few days later. Some 30km (20 miles) away, 17 bodies were discovered down a well with gunshot wounds to the head. One member of the band had managed to escape their captors and lead the authorities to where the corpses had been dumped.

Kombo Kolombia, who specialised in Colombian vallenato music, are the latest in a long list of musical acts to be murdered by Mexico's violent drug gangs.

All but one member of Kombo Kolombia was murdered

The men's families were quick to rebuff any suggestion that the musicians were involved in the drugs trade.

"My son was a healthy boy," said Maria Sagrario Saenz, mother of the group's percussionist, Ricardo Alfonso, after identifying his body. "He was a veterinarian. He gave percussion lessons to kids. He wasn't involved in anything he shouldn't be, should they try to link him to such things."
