Still sticking two fingers up: Ronnie Biggs' gesture of defiance as he arrives for funeral of Great Train Robber Bruce Reynolds

  • The former criminal mastermind died in his sleep last month aged 81
  • Brains behind £2.6million robbery of mail train with 16 accomplices
  • Jailed for 25 years for role and later wrote of experiences in memoir
  • Fellow gang member Ronnie Biggs attended private funeral in city of London

Former dons of the underworld including Ronnie Biggs have gathered for the funeral of Bruce Reynolds today, the mastermind behind the Great Train Robbery of 1963.

His death at the age of 81 came months before the 50th anniversary of the heist in which a gang escaped with a then record £2.6million – about £40million in today’s money.

In a rare public appearance, his fellow gang member Ronnie Biggs, 83, flicked the 'V' sign to members of the Press as he attended the service at St Bartholomew The Great, a church in the City of London.

Gangster accused of four murders 'had fantasies about murdering his rival... then had best sleep of his life after blowing him up with grenade'

  • Cregan denies murders of Mark and David Short in May and August 2012
  • But psychiatrist claims he admitted the killings in pre-trial interviews
  • Cregan was paranoid the Short family were trying to kill him, trial told
  • Cregan also said he was a drug dealer who earned up to £20,000 a week
  • Claims Cregan told him 'a big relief rushed through my body' after
  • 'Fantasised smashing his head with a hammer and cutting his head off'
  • Later murdered PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone with gun and grenade

Dale Cregan, who killed PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone in September, is on trial for the murders of David and Mark Short

One-eyed killer Dale Cregan told a psychiatrist he had 'the best sleep of his life after blowing up a father with a hand grenade', a court heard today.

Cregan, 29, has admitted the murder of PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, in September last year, but is on trial for the murders of father and son David and Mark Short in the months before, which he denies.

Today, a consultant forensic psychiatrist told Preston Crown Court of statements made by Cregan during three interviews while he was on remand in HMP Manchester.

In one interview Cregan allegedly admitted all four killings and said he had 'the best sleep of my life' after the brutal murder of David Short, 46.

Cregan also said he was a drug dealer who earned up to £20,000 a week, he was paranoid that the Short family were trying to kill him and he had 'fantasies' about murdering David Short.

Cregan is accused of shooting David Short before tossing a hand grenade at him, blowing his body apart at his home in Clayton, east Manchester, just months after shooting dead his son Mark Short, 23, in an attack on the Cotton Tree Pub in Droylsden, Manchester, on May 25 last year.

Breakthrough: Mystery DNA found at the scene of a quadruple murder in the French Alps could be that of the killer, police revealed today. Saad al-Hilli, 50, the murdered father, is pictured

Mystery DNA found at the scene of a quadruple murder in the French Alps could be that of the killer, police revealed today.
The vital breakthrough comes more than seven months after members of a British family were gunned down in an isolated beauty spot close to Lake Annecy.
It is being analysed at two laboratories in France and will enable detectives to step up their international manhunt for the murderer.
Saad Al-Hilli, 50, died alongside his wife Ikbal, 47, and his mother-in-law Suhalia Al-Allaf, 74, in their BMW car on September 5.

Sylvain Mollier, a 45-year-old French cyclist was also killed in the bloodbath, which is believed to have been carried out by at least one gunman brandishing a pistol.

Now Annecy prosecutor Eric Maillaud has confirmed that ‘unidentified DNA’ was found on ‘elements at the scene’.

These are believed to include spent gun cartridges and even parts of the murder weapon which mysteriously broke during the attack.

Telling tales on Thompson trial supergrass

THE career of Dennis David Woodman, a major Crown witness in the Arthur Thompson Jr murder trial at the High Court in Glasgow, is exposed tonight in harsh detail in Granada TV's World In Action.

It casts doubts yet again on his use by the Scottish authorities.

Woodman, known in England as Wilkinson or by other aliases, gave five days of colourful evidence, claiming Mr Paul Ferris, the accused, had confessed to him while they were in the segregation unit at Barlinnie Prison. However, his testimony was wrecked by incisive cross-examination from Mr Donald Findlay, QC.

Despite a considerable body of better quality evidence in what was Scotland's longest murder trial, the jury acquitted Mr Ferris on all charges.

The use of Woodman, one Crown source later said, meant ''the baby was thrown out with the bath water''.

Mr Steve Bolton, the programme's producer, said yesterday: ''When we first started hearing of Wilkinson/Woodman's use as a witness in the Ferris case, we were astonished because we already knew a lot about his background. It was very clear he had reached the end of his shelf life in the English courts after seven or eight cases.

''In the case of Kevin Wong at Chester Crown Court, the Judge said he would be unhappy if the jury convicted on the evidence of Woodman alone. Peter Brockelsby was cleared at Leeds Crown Court after other prisoners described Woodman reading court papers beforehand to brief himself.

''His career of lying, aside from the damage he did to individuals, is a black comedy.''

The programme examines why Woodman, now in the protection wing at Peterhead Prison, serving a lengthy sentence for the kidnapping of a Dumfries farmer, began his career as a police informer. It followed an earlier kidnapping accompanied by sadistic treatment of the victim.

Woodman feared a life sentence. However, a witness says on screen, if he could show the Judge he had helped the prosecution in other cases, he could then expect a substantial reduction.

He was held in Risley Remand Centre and, says World In Action, a string of men who had previously protested their innocence suddenly queued up to confess to Woodman. The police and a number of English Judges and juries then accepted his evidence.

World In Action have, however, unearthed another former Risley inmate who speaks of Woodman attempting to get him to go to the police and say he had overheard other criminals admitting crimes.

After Woodman assisted the police, a detective inspector spoke for him in court. For charges of theft, fraud, false imprisonment, indecent assault, and wounding with intent he received only six years.

The programme then describes how Woodman offered appeal lawyers deals to retract his evidence for the Crown if he was paid to do so. Also revealed is the help given to Woodman by the police after he left jail.

After his record as a supergrass was exposed in English newspapers, Woodman said he hoped for police protection and for rehousing. It was five years later that he re-emerged in Scotland.

Glasgow solicitor Peter Forbes says on screen that ''it just seemed inconceivable that anyone would shout details of such a major crime to any other party in the segregation unit and for Paul Ferris to have done it was totally and utterly inconceivable.''

World In Action journalist Andrew Bell said yesterday: ''Only a few weeks ago, John Major was talking about blowing away the cobwebs of secrecy yet whenever we asked anyone in an official position in Scotland to talk about the Ferris case they dived for cover.

''I asked the Crown Office, the procurator-fiscal's office in Glasgow, and Strathclyde Police but none would speak. Strathclyde Police told us that the case was still sub judice but both the Crown Office and the procurator-fiscal's office told us this was nonsense.

''We approached two prison governors to interview prisoners under the more relaxed guidelines which are now in force and both seemed more than happy to let us in. They were jumped on by the Scottish Office. They would give us no reason or tell us who had made the decision.''
