The Scottish Press Association is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Press Association, the national news agency for the UK and Ireland.

Our newswire tells the story of the nation in daily instalments. Every hour of every day, the media industry hears first about major breaking news from PA.

The newswire transmits over 100,000 words per day, telling the story - and the story behind the story. From heavyweight politics and libel cases to gripping crime stories and revelations about soap stars, PA covers a wide range of subjects.

Selected stories from The Scottish Press Association are transmitted on the UK newswire, while our dedicated ScotFile service delivers in-depth coverage of local events and the activities in the Holyrood parliament to media customers north of the border.

The newswire is transmitted directly into the editorial systems of media across the UK. In addition stories are repackaged for websites, mobile phones, newspaper pages, Teletext services and much more.

Look What Hppened To Us Last night
Sudden floods strand anglers

Water we doing here? Caught by the floods in Lower Broughty Ferry Road, off Stannergate, are (from left) John Souter (11), Martin Clark, John Souter sen, Frankie Clark, Robert Glennie and Elizabeth Glennie.

A GROUP of young Dundee anglers got more than they bargained for last night when a series of burst drains on Lower Broughty Ferry Road stranded them on the dykes of the Tay.

Eleven year-old John Souter and his friends were cut off from their parents’ cars—parked by the sewage treatment works—by three burst drains throwing water up into the air.

“When we were coming back from fishing around 8 o’clock we were stranded and had to come up over the top road,” he explained.

Not to be put off, the group got out their rods to try their luck in the road, made impassable by floodwater.

One Craigiebank walker said, “We just came around the corner and the far drain was spurting water up into the air like a geyser.

“A second one is still going and there was a third one on the go.”

By 9.30pm four United Utilities workers were at the scene but were “too busy to comment.” They made their way into the sewerage works compound that services Arbroath.

One worker later warned a group of cyclists to stay away, saying, “there may be a big hole in the road.”
