Weakest Link cop on charge.

May 18, 2007
A COP appeared in court on child porn charges yesterday — one day after starring on TV quiz The Weakest Link.

Sergeant Mark Bretherick, 33, was seen with host Anne Robinson by BBC2 viewers on Wednesday.

But yesterday he was in the dock at Swansea Crown Court facing 17 charges of possessing indecent pictures of children on his personal computer.

The sergeant was charged in February and suspended from Dyfed-Powys force pending the outcome of his court trial — expected for the autumn.

On The Weakest Link, Bretherick told Anne that he relaxes by dressing up in Saxon or Viking costumes for mock battles — as part of a historical re-enactment group.

He added he would love to see her running around a battlefield in a maiden’s outfit.

Bretherick said he was an “accident investigator” who worked for himself and as a subcontractor.

He told how he probed traffic accidents and cases of personal injuries at work to try to get good compensation deals for victims.

Bretherick won his team more than £1,000 before being voted out as the weakest link after the fifth round.

Yesterday the Swansea court hearing was adjourned for admin reasons.

A trial date was due to be set but a court official later said the case would probably be heard in the autumn.

Bretherick, from Forden, near Welshpool, denies all the alleged offences, which are said to have spanned from February 2001 to March 2006.

Yesterday a Dyfed-Powys police spokesman confirmed that Bretherick had been suspended from the force.

But the BBC said last night that it knew nothing of the charges against Bretherick.

A spokesman said: “We were completely unaware of the allegations against this contestant.”

Footage for The Weakest Link is filmed weeks before it is broadcast.

Iain Duncan, 28, was arrested and charged with being in possession of graphic illegal images on his computer.

The married constable was kept in custody following his court appearance earlier this week.

Duncan, who is being held in Glasgow's tough Barlinnie prison, now faces jail if he's convicted.

The Strathclyde Police officer appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday charged with possessing and downloading child pornography. He was refused bail.

A source said last night: "He will be eaten alive in jail once the inmates find out he's a cop.

"The charges he faces are pretty serious and he will be fresh meat in the prison. Cops don't do well in jail."

Duncan has a four-month-old son and lives in a £250,000 house in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, with his dentist wife Moira.

He was arrested following an investigation by police in England.

They contacted Strathclyde Police and officers from Duncan's own force called at his home.

The source said: "The police investigating the case chapped on Duncan's door and spoke to his wife. At that stage, they didn't realise he was a cop.

"They were shocked when she told them he was a policeman. Duncan was arrested immediately."

The PC, who wed Moira in Dunfermline in 2004, became a dad in September when baby Dylan was born.

Duncan graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2003 and became a quantity surveyor. He quit his job to join the police less than three years ago.

At the time of his arrest late last year, it is understood he was still serving in a child protection unit.

The units, staffed by speciallytrained officers, deal with physical and sexual abuse of children as well as neglect or emotional abuse.

Last night, a spokesman said: "Strathclyde Police can confirm a 28-year-old man was arrested and appeared from custody at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, January 14.

"We can confirm the individual is a serving police officer with Strathclyde Police, however he has been suspended from duty."

A spokesman for the Crown Office said last night: "We can confirm that Iain Duncan, of Bishopbriggs, is in custody.

"He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday on petition and was charged under section 52 of the Civic Government Scotland Act 1982. He was refused bail."

A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service confirmed: "He is being held in custody following a court appearance on Monday."

Ex-policeman viewed child abuse...
High Court in Edinburgh
The court heard the images described as "abhorrent"...
A former police officer has been jailed for two years and three months after he admitted possessing pictures of children being sexually abused.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Alexander Crawford, 63, from Dunoon, admitted possessing indecent pictures downloaded from the internet.

An expert said the images were the worst he had viewed in his career.

Sentencing, Lord Mackay of Drumadoon said: "The images were disgusting in the extreme."

The pictures - some of which featured babies - were found when Crawford took his computer to a shop for repair.

'Extreme depravity'

In a report for the court, expert Dr Michael O'Keefe said the pictures were "some of the worst still images I have come across in my career".

Lord Mackay said: "He described them as depicting children who had been subjected to abhorrent and degrading sexual practices of extreme depravity."

A total of 1,782 graphic images were found. Crawford will be kept under supervision for a year after his release.

Lord Mackay said he would report the case to Scottish ministers for a life-long ban on Crawford working with children.

Police hunt missing police sex offender.
Police are trying to trace a registered sex offender who went missing from his home more than two years ago.

Martin Cusick
Martin Cusick is not considered an immediate risk to the public

Former police officer Martin Cusick, 52, who abused three girls, has been missing from his home in Clarkston since October 2005. He was legally required to tell police of a change of address.

A police spokeswoman said Cusick, who has an estranged twin brother living in Glasgow, was not considered an "immediate risk". The public were warned not to approach Cusick and to report any sightings.

Det Insp Sam Carson said: "The investigation to trace him has included liaison with numerous agencies and enquiries throughout the length and breadth of the country. "We have recently received permission to publish his details in the hope that someone has either seen him or knows of his current whereabouts."

Cusick was jailed for five years in 1996 for lewd and libidinous behaviour against three children aged between six and 12.

This is a bloody outrage!!

Cops Blasted After Taking Two Years To Reveal Paedophile Is Missing

A PAEDOPHILE ex-cop has been missing for more than two years - but police only admitted yesterday they don't know where he is.

Pervert Martin Cusick, 52, vanished in October 2005. It took until yesterday for Strathclyde Police to alert the public and release his mugshot.

Detectives fear the ex-convict could be anywhere in the UK or abroad and may have returned to his former career as a lorry driver.

And there is concern that the hunt for him could be complicated by the fact that he has an identical twin brother.

Police went public about Cusick after the Crown Office approved the move. But the two-year delay has alarmed children's campaigners and politicians.

Tory justice spokesman Bill Aitken asked: "Why has it taken this length of time to let the public know this man is on the loose?

"Procedures are now in place to put pictures on the internet. They should have been acted upon."

Tom Roberts, of charity Children 1st, said: "It is really concerning that the whereabouts of this man are unknown."

Lyn Costello, of victims' charity Mothers Against Murder and Aggression, said the delay was "disgusting".

She added: "There is no need for it. They would not let a mad dog wander around for more than two years without warning the public."

Cusick was jailed for five years in 1996 for abusing three girls.

The youngest victim was six when her ordeal began and Cusick continued to abuse her for five years. The other girls were nine and 12.

Judge Lady Cosgrove told Cusick his "depraved" crimes had probably caused the children permanent damage. He had already left the police when he was caught.

As a registered sex offender, Cusick should have told the authorities when he changed his address.

But he left his home in Clarkston, Glasgow, in 2005 without revealing where he was going.

Police say they do not consider Cusick an immediate risk to the public. They warned people not to approach him and to call them if they see him.

The Strathclyde force defended the delay in issuing a picture of Cusick and said his risk status had not changed since 2005.

A spokeswoman said: "A set procedure must be followed when an offender goes missing. All lines of inquiry must be explored.

"Police have now reached the stage where every line has been exhausted. Following close consultation with the procurator fiscal and Crown Office, it is now considered appropriate to release his image."

The Crown Office said: "A request for the release of the photograph of a missing sex offender is always given the highest priority."

Detective Inspector Sam Carson, leading the hunt for Cusick, said: "The investigation has included liaison with numerous agencies and inquiries throughout the length and breadth of the country.

"We have recently received permission to publish his details."

Mr Carson added: "If anyone thinks they recognise the person in the photograph but is unsure whether it is Martin or his twin, they should contact the police.

"We have procedures that would quickly establish if it was his brother."

Cusick is one of triplets who all joined the police on the same day. He and his sister later left the force and his brother is now retired.

Mr Carson added: "In the past, Mr Cusick was a lorry driver and he may be doing similar work.

"He has also lived with a number of women and I would ask anyone who has had a relationship with him during the past two years to get in touch."

Anyone with information about Cusick should call 0141 532 4900 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Shame of Strathclyde Police's child protection unit cop found with more than 3000 kid porn images on his computer.

A POLICE child protection officer was caught with more than 3300 sickening child porn pics on his home computers.A court heard he told the cops who arrested him: "I'm ashamed."

Iain Duncan, 28, was traced through his email address after a police raid in Surrey caught another pervert.Police raided his house in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, and seized his laptop. A computer which had belonged to him was taken from his parents' home nearby.

The High Court in Glasgow heard yesterday the machines contained a total of 3319 still images and 20 video clips of child abuse.Twenty-one were of a type classified as the worst possible examples of child porn.

Duncan admitted possessing and distributing indecent images of children. Last night, he was in Barlinnie.

The court heard the worst was a six-minute movie clip of babies "being abused and prepared for abuse". It included tips on how to abuse a child and cover it up.

Dad-of-one Duncan sat with his head bowed in the dock as details of the case were read out in court. He was caught just a week after starting with Strathclyde Police's child protection unit, who deal with cases of physical and sexual abuse.

The court heard Duncan resigned from the force on Tuesday.John Scullion, prosecuting, said: "Police searched the house and found a laptop in the living room."He was asked if he'd received or sent pornographic images and replied, 'Yes'."

Duncan told officers the images were of "females aged about 18".But photos were found showing a girl aged 13 or 14 performing sex acts on an adult male.Duncan then admitted some images were of girls aged around 10.

When he was charged, he replied: "I know what I've done is wrong. I'm sorry - I'm ashamed."

Duncan swapped images with 25 fellow perverts by email. But the court heard there was no evidence he viewed certain files - including the six-minute clip. (DEVIANT LIAR)  Paul McBride QC, defending, said: "He does not accept this clip was viewed by him. It was shared in anticipation of being viewed. (MORE LIES)  "Lord Turnbull called for reports on Duncan. He will be sentenced on May 7.

Ex-police chief admits child porn...

A former chief superintendent of Humberside Police has admitted taking, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

Alec Alexander, 61, pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court to 17 offences after photographs were found on his computer.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and indecent assault. His case was adjourned for trial and he was remanded into custody.

Alexander retired in 2000 after 30 years of service.

The former police chief admitted 10 counts of making an indecent photograph of a child between March 2005 and January 2008.

Other charges:

He also admitted five counts of distributing an indecent photograph of a child between February 2007 and January 2008, and two counts of possessing an indecent photograph of a child in January 2008.

He is alleged to have raped a girl, aged over 16, between January 1992 and December 1992 and has denied four counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14. These are alleged to have taken place between January 1983 and December 1985.

Alexander, who lives west of Hull, was a divisional commander at Humberside Police and had reached the position of chief superintendent before his retirement.

A FORMER child protection officer who downloaded thousands of child porn pictures has been jailed for more than four years.

Iain Duncan, of Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, admitted possessing 3319 indecent images of children. Many of the images were rated as "level 5" - the most serious on the list of child porn pictures - by prosecutors.

The cop, formerly a constable with Strathclyde Police, also admitted possessing 20 moving images, receiving 176 images, and distributing a further 150 pictures. Duncan, 28, was sentenced to four years and four months at the High Court in Glasgow.

Sentencing him, Judge Lord Turnbull said: "This court must do what it can to express the total public abhorrence for such abuse of children and do what it can to prevent repetition.

"The full awfulness of the activity which you were engaged in can be hidden by talking of 'images'."However, each so-called 'image' records an act of barbarity perpetrated on a live and vulnerable child or infant.

"Those, like you, who are willing to take possession of such images bear an indirect responsibility for the acts which are perpetrated on these young victims by creating a demand for the photographs and thus for commission of the abuse itself."

Police officer accused of child porn offences found stabbed to death outside home...

Geoffrey Harries

Former police officer Geoffrey Harries was due to appear on child porn charges before he was stabbed to death...

A police officer facing child pornography charges has been found stabbed to death outside his own home.

Geoffrey Harries, 49, was due in court next week charged with possessing more than 2,000 indecent images of children while working as a police constable.

Harries - who resigned from the force three months ago after being arrested - heard a disturbance in the driveway of his home at 1.45am.

He went outside to investigate and was stabbed several times in the chest.

He was taken to hospital but died five hours later.

Police are now investigating whether it was a revenge attack in connection with the child pornography charges he was facing.

A 30-year-old man is being questioned by police over the killing.

It is believed Harries may have challenged someone who was tampering with his car parked outside his home in the village of Trimsaran, near Llanelli, West Wales.

A neighbour said: "It is shocking. We don't know if it had anything to do with the forthcoming court case but it was the talk of the village.

"No one likes having an alleged paedophile living in your street."

Harries's home in a quiet modern estate was taped off  while detectives examined the scene.

Dyfed Powys Police spokeswoman Ceri Doyle said: "We have launched a murder investigation after a man was killed in Trimsaran.

"A man has been arrested in connection with the killing and is being questioned by police.

"House-to-house enquiries are being carried out and the neighbourhood policing team are reassuring residents."

The case against Harries was brought following an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

An investigation discovered he had a total of 2,082 images on his computer while working for Dyfed-Powys Police.

He appeared before Cardiff magistrates on May 15 where it was revealed that 52 of the images were classed as level four category and nine of them were classed as level five - the most serious on the scale.

Harries was due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court next Monday charged with 15 offences of making indecent images of children between May 2005 and December 2007.

He was also facing one charge of possessing indecent images, contrary to the Criminal Justice Act 1988, from November 26, last year.

Harries, who is married, was released on bail and was living in the quiet village while waiting trial.

A post mortem examination confirmed Mr Harries died from stab wounds.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said: "Magistrates have granted a warrant of further detention for 36 hours in relation to the 30-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder in Trimsaran."

Pc murder trial told of threats...

Geoffrey Harries
Former police constable Geoffrey Harries was stabbed 20 times...

A jury has been told about threats allegedly made by a man hours before an ex-Pc facing charges over child abuse pictures was stabbed to death.

Daniel Marcel Williams denies murdering Geoffrey Harries, 49, at Trimsaran, near Llanelli in Carmarthenshire.

Pc Stuart Flynn told Swansea Crown Court Mr Williams shouted he was going to get the "paedo" on his estate.

Mr Flynn said the defendant said: "He's one of you lot. If you're not going to do something about it, I will."

The opening of the trial on Thursday was told Mr Harries, a former Dyfed-Powys Police officer, who was at the time facing charges for having indecent images of children, was stabbed 20 times in June 2008 in a "brutal and merciless attack".

On Friday, jurors were told the death threat was made just after Mr Williams's brother Chad had been arrested outside a pub.

Police outside house in Trimsaran in June 2008
Mr Harries and his wife had moved to his mother's house in Trimsaran...

Pc Flynn told the jury he had wanted to speak to the defendant about the threat, but was worried it would inflame the already tense situation outside the pub.

Shortly afterwards, he was called to a road accident in Llanelli and passed Mr Williams, who was walking in the middle of the road.

By that time, he was totally calm and told the officer he was just "being stupid in front of his mates".

Pc Flynn said Mr Williams gave his name as Martin Preece and he told him to go home and sleep it off.

Elwen Evans QC, defending, suggested Mr Williams had not made any threats, but had only been complaining that the police were doing nothing about a paedophile living on his estate.

Asked how he could remember the exact words when he made no note at the time, Pc Flynn replied: "Because he carried it through."

Drink driving:

But Miss Evans suggested that after Mr Harries's death, the officer had "put two and two together and made about nine."

The prosecution says Mr Harries was stabbed 20 times after he confronted Mr Williams, who'd been slashing his car tyres.

The opening of the trial heard that Mr Harries was on police bail and had moved in with his wife to his mother's house at Trimsaran where they lived seven doors from Mr Williams.

Neighbours, especially Mr Williams, who lived with his brother, were unhappy at his arrival, the court was told.

Paul Thomas QC for the prosecution said Mr Williams and his brother had been stopped as they were leaving a pub.

He said: "Chad Williams was arrested for drink driving and his brother started picking a fight with the police. He shouted the word 'paedo' more than once."

Combat knife:

Mr Thomas said Mr Williams mentioned Mr Harries's address and said: "Send a car there in about 20 minutes. I'm telling you, I'm going to have him."

The jury was told that a police patrol car was sent to the estate to keep watch on Mr Harries's house but left after 30 minutes when it "seemed quiet and calm".

But the prosecution alleges Mr Williams had "a long-standing fascination with military equipment and knives" and showed the jury a 6in combat knife bought by the defendant.

Mr Thomas said Mr Williams was dressed in a black hooded top and possibly a black balaclava and gloves when Mr Harries later spotted him outside the house.

He described how Mrs Harries went upstairs to bed and looked outside to see Daniel Williams crouched behind their van.

"She guessed correctly that he was slashing the tyres - she told her husband and he went out.

"Within a few minutes Geoffrey Harries was bleeding to death."

Mr Thomas said: "It was a brutal and merciless attack."

The court heard Mr Williams later denied involvement in the killing until police found Mr Harries's blood on his boots, jeans and hooded top when he changed his story and said it was an act of self-defence.

The trial continues on Monday.
