Graydon Smith forced his pregnant girlfriend to sign an 'abuse' contract

A violent boyfriend forced his pregnant girlfriend to sign an 'abuse contract' allowing him to beat her whenever he wanted.

Under the terms of the contract Graydon Smith,31, was allowed to punch, kick and throttle his 19 year old girlfriend.

His only restriction was that he wasn't allowed to punch her stomach.

The bizarre contract was revealed after police arrested him for assaulting his girlfriend at their home in Seattle, Washington.

The victim's stepfather had called police when he called at the house and saw Smith throttling his daughter.

Smith admitted to police that he had made his girlfriend, who has not been named, sign the contract giving him free rein to carry out domestic abuse.

Seattle police detective Elizabeth Ellis said: 'Graydon made her sign a statement giving him permission to physically abuse her anywhere on her body except on her pregnant belly.'

When police arrested Smith they found his girlfriend with bruises and cuts to her face. She confirmed her boyfriend was responsible for the assault.

Unemployed Smith has been charged with assault and harassment. He is being held on £75,000 bond.

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 6:23 PM on 10th June 2010

A newborn baby has been found abandoned in a village pub, police said today.

The baby boy, who is less than a day old, was found in a bag at 11.15pm yesterday at the Hawk and Buckle pub in Etwall, Derbyshire.

He was taken to Derby Royal Hospital where he was named Jack by staff. He is described as being in good health.

Abandoned: Hospital staff have named the baby boy Jack. He was less than a day old when he was found

Director of nursing, Em Wilkinson-Brice, appealed for the mother to contact the pregnancy assessment unit.

She said: 'He is a beautiful baby boy and he is being cared for on the children’s ward.

'He will need some treatment for the next 48 hours and various tests are being done as a precautionary measure.

'Clearly his mother has recently given birth to a child so it is really really important that she is assessed and seen by medical staff as soon as possible, really for her own health.'

I'm trying for Bin Laden's grandchild: Briton's surrogacy deal with son of terror chief

By Claire Ellicott and Amy Oliver
Last updated at 7:29 AM on 11th June 2010

A British woman has agreed to become a surrogate mother to Osama Bin Laden's grandson.

Louise Pollard is having fertility treatment in an attempt to conceive using the sperm of Bin Laden's son Omar and the eggs of his British wife Jane Felix Browne.

The couple have been unable to have children since marrying in 2007 and contacted 24-year-old Miss Pollard through a surrogacy website.

If she is successful, it will mean that the world's most wanted terrorist will have a British grandchild.

So far, however, three attempts at conception have been unsuccessful. But Mrs Pollard is due to have another pregnancy test soon.

If the result is negative, she has vowed to make a fourth attempt using her own eggs and Bin Laden's sperm.

Omar, the fourth eldest child of Bin Laden, has had several visa applications to live in Britain rejected. But a British son may help his attempts, though Home Office officials said he would not automatically be granted a visa.

He is said to be deeply saddened that Mrs Pollard, who has already given away two surrogate babies and is thought to be the youngest surrogate mother in the UK, has yet to conceive.

Omar, a scrap metal dealer, and his wife have been based in Qatar for two years and it is believed that Mrs Pollard has been receiving treatment in UAE.

The personal assistant from Bristol, told friends she has made three trips to Dubai, two in May and one earlier this month.

A friend said the couple have agreed to pay her expenses up to £10,000, the legal maximum in Britain, for her flights and accommodation in Dubai.

Mrs Pollard appeared on ITV's This Morning yesterday to talk about agreeing to become a surrogate mother again. But she did not reveal the identity of the couple.

She spoke of the emotional bond she formed with childless couples and said: 'I have my next surrogacy lined up. I'm using the mother's eggs and the father's sperm, but I'm not going to rule out using my own eggs.'

Her latest client Omar met his wife on a riding trip to Egypt's pyramids in March 2007.

He became the grandmother's sixth husband when they wed a month later in two Islamic ceremonies in Egypt and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Mrs Bin Laden, from Moulton, Cheshire, suffers from MS and has three adult children from previous relationships.

She converted to Islam before meeting her husband and now uses the name Zaina Mohamad al-Sabah Bin Laden.

Omar, 29, has a six-year-old son from a previous marriage, but after marrying 54-year-old Miss Felix Browne, he is keen to have another with the help of Mrs Pollard.

She has previously given birth for a London couple after artificial insemination in July 2007, using a kit given to the pair by a clinic.

Mrs Pollard, married to soldier Damian, 24, had a girl in April 2008 and a boy in July last year.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mrs Pollard she said that being a surrogate mother is her calling and she plans to have at least one baby a year until she is no longer physically able.

She hopes to have more babies than Carol Horlock, who has had 12 babies for other couples and is the country's-most prolific surrogate mother. 'I remember watching a programme about surrogacy with my mum,' Mrs Pollard said

'The overriding thing I remember is the look on the couple's faces when they were presented with their baby. I thought how wonderful it would be to help couples like that and I said to my mum that one day, I would like to be a surrogate.'

She added: 'The more I thought about how easy I'd found being pregnant and the aftermath, the more I thought I should do it for someone else.

'I kept thinking I was young, fit and could carry a baby with ease, why shouldn't I help someone who couldn't.

Mrs Pollard was 17 when she first considered surrogacy and gave away her first child at the age of 21.

Both the surrogate children she has had so far were biologically hers.

Rescuers arrive to free trapped man as he finishes amputating his own arm

By Scott Warren
Last updated at 9:33 PM on 11th June 2010

Jonathan Metz

Life or death decision: Jonathan Metz sawed off his arm after it became trapped in a furnace

An American man is recovering after cutting his own arm off after it became stuck in a broken furnace in his basement.

Jonathan Metz started cutting three days after becoming stuck while he tried to fix the unit, as he began to smell his flesh rotting.

The 31-year-old had almost cut through the limb when rescuers arrived, his friends having raised the alarm when he failed to arrive at work and a softball game.

Police forced their way into his Hartford, Connecticut, apartment and found him in agony, his severed arm having succumbed to gangrene.

The amputation was completed in hospital.

'There was a little bit of fat that remained and he was in and out of consciousness,' said Dr Scott Ellner, Metz's surgeon at Hartford's Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

'It sounds like maybe there was a nerve there that prevented him from completing the amputation.'

Metz, who lives alone, had been trying to replace the boiler fins on his furnace on Sunday when his arm became trapped.

Friend Luca DiGregorio said he and other friends grew worried when Metz failed to attend work or social engagements.

Metz also did not answer the doorbell when DiGregorio visited his home on Wednesday, where he said he saw Metz's dog 'yipping at the back door'.

DiGregorio called police, who found Metz in the basement.

metz house

Trapped: Metz, 31, performed the amputation three days after it became stuck in the broken unit at his home in Hartford, Connecticut

'I was a little worried, especially when the first cop showed up,' DiGregorio said. 'Then more showed up, and then the ambulance showed up, so it got a little nerve-racking.'

Firefighters ripped apart the furnace with heavy tools, including a spreader normally used to take the door off a car.

Once they did so, the arm 'just gave away, because his arm was already infected and the tissue was non-viable', fire chiefs said.

Officials didn't know what type of tools Metz used to attempt the amputation, saying he was mumbling during the rescue operation.

They said Metz drank some of the water that had leaked from the furnace to help him stay alive.

Dr David Shapiro, a trauma specialist who also operated on Metz, said he could not have lived much longer.

'I've never experienced somebody who had the ability to go through something like this,' Dr Ellner said.

'He provides a lot of inspiration for myself, not just as a physician but as a human being.'

Dr Shapiro said that although there was still some concern about infection, Metz was expected to survive.

He will have to undergo more surgery to prepare the arm for a prosthetic.

Newborn baby is catapulted from car at 70mph in motorway horror... and SURVIVES

By Daily Mail Reporter

Baby Jonathan Samuel survived the bizarre accident on the M6 motorway

Baby Jonathan Samuel survived the bizarre accident on the M6 motorway

A six-week-old baby boy has survived being catapulted from a car travelling at 70mph.

Jonathan Samuel was flung out of his father's car after a tyre blew, causing it to spin six times before smashing into the central reservation of the M6 near Wigan.

Still strapped in his car seat, the newborn flew out of the window, bounced along the fast lane before sliding out of his harness and eventually coming to a halt on the edge of the carriageway.

His father Oliver, 31, told the Sunday Mirror how he jumped out of the car and searched urgently for his missing son.

He said: ‘I was screaming because I expected to find parts of him and see blood. I was looking for his body.’

After finding Jonathan’s empty car seat, the father-of-two added: ‘It was like a nightmare getting worse, it was agony. Our baby was gone.’

Oliver then heard crying and spotted his son lying in the outside lane – as a pair of headlights approached – before snatching him back to safety.

He brought his unharmed baby back to hysterical wife Sadaf, who said: ‘I just grabbed the baby, bracing myself for what I might see. But there wasn’t a scratch.

‘He was distressed but as soon as I cuddled him he fell asleep.’

Baby Jonathan was checked over by hospital staff who found him ‘fit and well, alert and happy.’

Babies born at night in hospital 'have higher risk of dying'

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:16 PM on 14th June 2010

The time of day a women gives birth could influence her chances of a smooth delivery, according to European researchers.

A study of more than 700,000 births at Dutch hospitals found newborns were more likely to die or be admitted to neonatal intensive care if they were delivered at night rather than during the day.

A study found newborns were more likely to die or need intensive care treatment if they were born at night

A study found newborns were more likely to die or need intensive care treatment if they were born at night

The research covered the period between 2000 and 2006 and was published in the latest edition of the obstetrics and gynaecology journal BJOG.

Overall, the study found infants at smaller community hospitals who were born in the evening (between 6pm to midnight) or overnight (midnight to 8am) were 32 per cent to 47 per cent more likely to die than those born during the day.

Overnight births were also linked to an increased risk of newborn death at larger hosiptals. The findings were similar when the researchers looked at the risk of all adverse birth outcomes together.

The researchers stressed that in developed countries serious complications are rare no matter what time of day or night a woman delivers.

'It is very important indeed to realise that risks are generally low and that the level of care in these kinds of Western countries is high,' researcher Dr Eric Steegers of Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

Dr Steegers said it is possible that the increased risks reflect the fact that fewer senior staff members - including obstetricians, neonatologists and anesthesiologists - are available during night shifts.

It's also possible that staff fatigue is a factor, since night-shift work is at odds with the body's natural rhythms.

However Dr Steegers said more research is needed to understand the extent to which hospital organization plays into the higher risk of childbirth complications at night.

A report in todays paper says tht police in Scotland are going to withdraw rescources from affluent areas and concentrate on the poorer and that the era of universal policing is at an end due to cut backs in funding. Patric Shearer of the Chief Police Officers in Scotland is quoted as saying that, " better -off Scots should look after themselves". The mind boggles at to the meaning of those words and that, "gold plated policing is no longer possible.

How your heart could unlock your iPhone

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 3:03 PM on 14th June 2010

The Apple patent could be used for the benefit of cardiac patients

The Apple patent proposes monitoring heart rhythms in order to identify the person using the device

Computer giant Apple is set to develop cardiac sensors for the iPhone which will monitor heart rhythms in order to identify the person using the device.

While the patent application filed could also be used to the benefit of cardiac patients and exercise enthusiasts, it states wider potential uses, including authenticating financial transactions.

The device would work by recognising unique electrical patterns caused by differences in heart size, heart rate and muscle strength.

It would authenticate the user’s identity by matching it to a pre-recorded heart beat stored into the phone.

The new biometric recognition approach will not require passwords or complex touchscreen movements, making the process largely seamless.

The patent reads: ‘The heart sensor and processor can detect and process the user's cardiac activity at any suitable time. The processor can receive and process heart activity when a user slides a finger across the display to unlock the device.

‘In some embodiments the duration of particular portions of a user's heart rhythm or the relative size of peaks of a user's electrocardiogram can be processed and compared to a stored profile to authenticate a user of the device.’

The patent states the device could also use the owner’s heartbeat to select music that matches their mood or level physical activity.

Meanwhile a new iPhone app has been released which allows you to use your mobile as a football rattle.

Users can choose from five different sounds which speed up or slow down according to the speed and vigour with which they wave the device.

Desperate children locked in hot car scrawl 'help' message to attract attention

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 12:56 PM on 15th June 2010

Two children were found locked in a hot car after writing a 'help' message on the window to attract passers-by.

A six-year-old boy and a girl, ten, wrote the message in condensation that had formed on the window after spending an hour in the car, which had been deadlocked.

Concerned shoppers called the fire brigade but the male driver of the car, believed to be a family member, returned to unlock it before emergency services intervened.

Rochdale

Child neglect fears: Two children were treated for dehydration at the Rochdale Infirmary after allegedly being left in a car for over an hour

Police and paramedics were called after the children complained of feeling unwell.

They were treated at the scene and taken to Rochdale Infirmary and the man was arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

Social services is now investigating the matter.

Witness Diane Leach saw the drama unfolding in Yorkshire Street, Rochdale, Greater Manchester at 4.25pm last Friday.

She said: 'The car was locked and the children had been left inside and had written 'help' in the window.

'The fire brigade and police were called but a man came back with the keys before they had chance to smash into the car to get them out.

'It is believed that he said he would be gone 10 minutes but he was gone for about an hour. The children had overheated and I think they were suffering from dehydration.

'They were taken away in an ambulance.'

A police spokesman said: 'Police were called by the fire service to Yorkshire Street following reports a six-year old boy and a 10-year-old girl had been left in a car.

'They were taken to hospital as a precaution but released a short time later.'

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of child neglect and was released on bail until July 1 pending further inquiries.

A council spokesman said: 'We are aware of the incident and the details have been forwarded to children's social care for consideration.'

A spokesman for the NSPCC warned against leaving children alone inside cars.

He said: 'The NSPCC's advice on leaving children alone in cars is to always keep your child with you, wherever possible.

'If you decide it's safe to leave your child in the car always keep them within your sight and never leave them for more than a couple of minutes.

'Never leave a young child in the car if you can possibly avoid doing so.

'Always keep the car well ventilated, always keep children fastened in their car seats, never leave the key in the car or the doors unlocked, always park safely and legally and never expect young children to look after baby brothers and sisters.'

Keep the £250,000 tip! Pensioner leaves regular cabbie her entire estate in her will

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:55 PM on 16th June 2010

A cabbie has retired after a regular passenger left him a £250,000 tip... in her will.

Don Pratt, 65, spent 20 years ferrying pensioner Mary Watson to and from her local shops in Newquay, Cornwall.

He picked her up from her house and took her wherever she needed to go.

But Mary, in her 80s, left her favourite taxi driver one final large tip - a quarter of a million pounds.

Mary left Don her whole estate which included a small house and savings.

Father-of-four Don, a taxi driver for 30 years, said: 'She was always a good tipper in life and she's was an even better tipper when she went.

'I knew Mary for 20 years. She was a very nice lady and was always very generous.

'We would always have a good chat while I ferried her around. One day she said to me 'when I pass on I'll look after you'.

'I took it with a pinch of salt at the time - I had no idea she was going to leave me a fortune.

'When I was told she had left everything to me I just couldn't believe it. We were sad to hear she had passed but thankful she had left us this money.

'We are very grateful for her generosity. In nearly 30 years as a cabbie, this is certainly the biggest tip I've ever had.'

Don, married to Gill, 63, ferried Mary around until a few years ago when she moved to Northampton.

He said: 'She moved away to Northampton and later went into a care home and we lost contact completely.

'But obviously she always remembered me and left me one last big tip. She left me everything.

'I'm not sure what family she had or how they feel about it but the solicitor was clear in that she wanted me to have what she left behind.

'This money means that we can retire and go travelling. We want to go around England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland - to start with anyway.

The story has echoes of the film Driving Miss Daisy, which details the friendship of Morgan Freeman's taxi driver character who drives a Jewish widow - played by Jessica Tandy - around for 20 years.

'I've had a great time being a taxi driver. I've been all over the country delivering people. I'm going to miss them.

'Mary was a very nice person, everybody liked her and at her funeral so many people had lovely things to say about her.'

Mary spent the last two years of her life at the Argyle House care home in Northampton, where staff yesterday described her as a 'lovely lady'.

A spokesman said: 'Mary was a lovely person and all the staff and guests liked her very much. She didn't have any close family to speak of.

'We didn't know anything about her leaving money to the taxi driver but there was a whole side to her life we didn't know about.

'It's a very generous thing to do and he obviously had a great impact on her life. He must have been a very good driver.'

Six-week-old girl died after religious fanatic mother stuffed Bible pages in her mouth and then sat on her

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:47 PM on 17th June 2010

 Julia Lovemore

Detained indefinitely: Julia Lovemore admitted killing her baby Faith

A six-week-old girl being monitored by social workers died after her mentally-ill mother sat on her, a court heard.

Julia Lovemore, 41, had torn out pages of the Bible and stuffed them into baby Faith's mouth before smothering her.

She was yesterday detained indefinitely under the mental health act after admitting the manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility , which happened in June 2009.

Cambridge Crown Court heard she was a religious fanatic who had been in a 'florid state of psychoses' at the time of the killing.

Judge Mr Justice Cooke was told two health workers were at Lovemore's home on the day Faith was smothered.

A health visitor and a psychiatric nurse had been concerned about the behaviour of Lovemore's husband David, 39 - also a mentally-ill religious fanatic, the court heard.

When they arrived at the house in June last year they found Mr Lovemore praying loudly and shouting 'Take the devil out of Julia.'

He refused to answer questions and they left to consult with experts, fearing their presence was making him more agitated.

Later that day, Mr Lovemore turned up at his GP's surgery carrying the child's lifeless body.

He was accompanied by Faith's older sister who had been doused in white spirit but was otherwise unharmed. It is believed Faith was dead or dying when the social worker visited.

Judge Mr Justice Jeremy Cooke yesterday ordered that Mrs Lovemore be detained indefinitely under the mental health act.

The court heard how Mrs Lovemore, a Christian fundamentalist, had suffered at least three manic psychotic episodes since being diagnosed with bi-polar effective disorder in 1995.

Julia Lovemore

Baby Faith's Mose's basket pictured in Julia Lovemore's home

Prosecutor John Farmer said he older daughter was put on the at risk register in November 2006 when her mother suffered a relapse and hit her with a hairbrush.

When Mrs Lovemore was 28 weeks pregnant with Faith a consultant psychologist concluded there was a 'high risk' of further relapse in the post-birth stage and monitoring was 'essential'.

Both Lovemores held extreme religious views and this coupled with their psychiatric history meant in June 2009 social workers scheduled a review of a protection order on the children.

Mr Farmer said: 'With hindsight it was judged both parents were deteriorating sharply. Profound mental ill health and engagement with religious beliefs turned out to be an explosive cocktail.

'On the day in question the two mental health professionals arrived and reached the conclusion that the situation was very unstable.'

Neither of them saw the defendant or Faith and the best interpretation of events suggests by then Faith was already dead or dying.

'There is no other reason why the husband was intensely engagement with prayer.'

In a statement Mrs Lovemore gave to police some time after her arrest she tried to explain her memories of that day.

She said: 'I sat in my bedroom and I was ripping pages out of my Bible. I put some small bits of paper in Faith's mouth and she spat them out.

'For some reason I sat on her, I was crying. I was bouncing on the bed. I don't know why I was sitting on her. I got bi-polar.'

In mitigation, Frances Oldham QC said Mrs Lovemore was responding well to psychiatric treatment but Faith's death 'could have been avoided'.

She said: 'Given her history and also the history of her husband this is a tragedy that could have been avoided. There was evidence of disengagement by Julia from the mental health services.'

Sentencing, Mr Justice Cooke said Mrs Lovemore's bi-polar disorder meant she suffered from grandiose delusions of special powers, religious delusions of identity and auditory hallucinations.

He said: 'You were profoundly mentally disordered which subsequently impaired the responsibility for what you did.'

Cambridgeshire Local Safeguarding Children Board Vice Chairman, Gordon Jeyes, said after the hearing that a serious case review had been conducted.

He said: 'The death of any child is a tragedy and we are deeply upset and saddened by what has happened.

'The circumstances around this death were exceptional. There were complex issues within the family around mental health, and the practice of their religious beliefs.

'The report highlights that agencies did work effectively with the family and that there was good communication between practitioners.

'The report also highlights that the link between the family's background of mental illness, and the way they chose to practice their religious beliefs, was not sufficiently understood.'

Admin says: Psychiatric disorder. Fantastic defense plea for a cold-blooded murderer who is just plain evil to the core yet hasn't quite come to terms with themselves. Pathetic. Allegedly, the severity of this woman's bipolar disorder made her commit this crime. It didn't help matters that both her and her husband - who also suffered from 'psychiatric illness' - are religion freaks and believe they have special powers. That isn't bipolar disorder. That's just plain old delusion. This couple - both loons - should never have been allowed to have children by law. If these two people were so bloody dangerous, what the hell is placing their children on an 'at risk' register going to achieve? Clearly nothing, given that the youngest child is now dead, at the hands of her own mother. Hello world - there are pills for bipolar sufferers - and before anyone decides to shoot me down in flames here, I know what I'm talking about. HUGE difference between someone who is genuinely suffering from bipolar disorder, and someone who murders their own 6 week old baby. Enough said.

A girl aged one has died after being left in a hot car for 45 minutes - because her mother forgot she was there.

Temperatures outside the car had soared to nearly 33C.

Police in Kingsville, southern Texas, said the mother had just returned home from picking up her children when she left the young girl in the family car on Wednesday afternoon.

It is not clear how many children the woman has. She has not been identified.

The case has been turned over to prosecutors, though no charge has yet been filed.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported that the local temperature about 5pm on Wednesday, when police were called, was 32.78C. The heat index was 39C.

At that heat, the temperature inside the car would have soared to an injury-causing level within just 15 minutes.

'A child's body overheats three to five times more than an adult because they tend to observe more heat and sweat less,' Mari Cantu with Driscoll Children's Hospital in Texas, told local media.

'So leaving a child in a vehicle can lead to deadly consequences, even heat stroke. They can get seizures, brain damage. It can damage their other vital organs.'

The girl was the fourth Texan child to die in a hot car this year. Since 1998, 62 children have died in hot cars in Texas.

State police said parents in Texas could face a criminal charge for leaving their child alone for just five minutes or more.

If the child is injured while they are alone, parents could be charged with a felony case of injury.

They warned parents to do things to help them remember their child is in a car - such as placing a purse or wallet on the back seat with the child.

'Parents need to be aware of their children's locations during the hottest time of the year,' police said in a statement.

'A child is in danger if in a vehicle for just a few minutes.'

Admin says: Whilst I understand (and fully appreciate) that pregnancy and child birth can affect a woman's intelligence, it should, in the majority of cases be a temporary measure that returns to normal once the baby has been born. How thick must this b**ch have been to start out with, if she can forget she has a toddler in a car for 45 minutes?? I can't even forget I have toddlers for 45 seconds - and quite rightly so when they are in the car with me. Some people - by law - should not be allowed to conceive.

A BOWL of porridge large enough to feed 2000 people is expected to create a stir at Cupar Highland Games next month.

Cupar Round Table and Quaker Oats will attempt to break the world record for the largest bowl of porridge ever made.

Around 80 kilograms of Scott’s Porage Oats, which are made by the Cupar firm, will be mixed with water pumped into a huge specially-made steel pot by firefighters from the town.

It is thought it will take two to three hours to heat the mixture well.

With a Guinness World Record adjudicator on hand on the day, organisers are confident that the massive breakfast—which they hope to tip the scales at 500 kilograms—will make it straight into the record books.

A forklift truck will load the huge bowl, measuring 1.5 metres in height and width, on to a trailer from Netherton Tractors, to transport it for weighing.

Cupar Round Table chairman Craig Manson and past chairman Gavin Howie had the idea as a way of attracting new visitors to the highland games on July 4.

Mr Manson said, “Cupar has had a fair bit of bad press lately because of shops shutting down and other things so we are doing this to raise community spirit.

“We also want to people to get involved with Cupar Round Table, which raises £11,000 to £12,000 each year which we give to community projects and charities.”

A Californian couple have been arrested after apparently trying to sell their six-month-old baby for $25 (£17) outside a Walmart store.

Patrick Fousek, 38, and Samantha Tomasini, 20, were detained after Fousek allegedly approached two women outside the shop and asked if they would like to buy his child.

The women initially thought Fousek was joking, but when he became persistent, they became suspicious and reported it to police, a spokesman said.

Patrick Fousek and Samantha Tomasini were arrested after apparently trying to sell their six-month-old baby outside a Walmart store for $25

'They did an outstanding job and gave our officers good information. I don't know if they're mothers but they definitely had that instinct to help,' Officer Lalo Villegas said.

Fousek and Tomasini were arrested at 1am on Wednesday at their home. Officers said the couple appeared high on methamphetamine and the house was in disarray.

A police report also claimed that Tomasini told Child Protective Services, who took the baby, that she had breast-fed the infant while under the influence, Villegas said.

The couple now face child endangerment charges and were also booked on charges of being under the influence of narcotics.

Fousek was also served with an extra charge of violating probation. although Villegas did not give details on his previous brush with the law.

The couple was expected to be in court for an arraignment today, at which time they would be assigned public defenders.

Admin says: As shocking as this story may be, it is perhaps the 'comments' that have been submitted by online readers that are the most shocking. For example, the first comment left states that instead of mocking and condemning these two parents for trying to sell their baby for approximately 20 quid, we should show them pity and understanding, and furthermore, went on to state that any individual who had a different opinion than the one from this bleeding heart lefty, was the scum as opposed to the people in this news story.

It's people like this, who have no backbone, that allow people to commit crimes, and be safe in the knowledge that if they give a good sob story, they'll likely get off with it. It's these bleeding heart do-gooders of society that give 'scum' their rightful place, and try to dole out reasons and excuses for every bad thing that they do. Oh, they had a tough upbringing. Oh, they have a history of mental illness brought on by the death of a childhood pet. Oh, they have succummbed to the evil lure of drugs and must therefore be given understanding when they chib an auld grannie to get their fix. Oh, they need help and understanding, to make them better, law-abiding people like us. B**locks. They all need put before a judge who has enough savvy to sentence them to however many years fit their crime, and if none do, they must then have the savvy to realise who is a waste of time and resources and ultimately, a drain on society. And call in the firing squad. I'd start with these two.

Bungling workmen left a council red-faced after they misspelt a 'Bus Stop' road marking as 'BUS SOTP'.

Contractors made the glaring gaff as they re-painted the road markings in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Richard Richardson said: 'My wife, Lyn, noticed the sign and thought it didn't  look right. So she turned round and drove back for another look. She couldn't  believe it.'

Officials at Kirklees Council quickly ordered the blunder to be corrected, and the necessary work was carried out three days later.

A council spokesman said: 'The work was done by contractors working on behalf of the council and was quickly rectified at no extra cost.'

In May, workmen wrote 'No Entrt' on a one-way street in the West Midlands.

They were ordered to re-paint the markings, which were painted on Marshall Road, Smethwick.

Councillor Derek Rowley, from Sandwell Council, said at the time the mistake would be rectified as soon as possible.

The error was made by a subcontractor who was amending the wording at no extra cost, according to Mr Rowley.

However, earlier this year, councils across England admitted paying hundreds of pounds to correct street signs with spelling and punctuation mistakes and missing information.
