Police swoop on landlord for organising an 'ugliest woman' competition when it was actually meant for men!

A pub holding a competition to find the ‘Ugliest Woman’ got a visit from the police after someone reported them for sexism.

An unknown complainant demanded the competition be cancelled and wanted the owners of Islay Inn prosecuted.

However, when police arrived at the Glasgow venue they gave manager George Hogg the go ahead after discovering it was, in fact, a competition for men dressed as women.

Mr Hogg told of his disbelief of the complaint and accused the protestor of being ‘over the top with political correctness.’

He said: ‘I have no idea who made the complaint and the police wouldn’t tell me - but if he or she had bothered to read the advert properly, they would have realised that it was not ugly women we were looking for - but ugly men dressed up as women.

Marion Scott,  Joan Burnie, Jackie Burd, Cara Page, Derek (Roxanne) Alexander, Russell (Rosebud) Findlay, Mrs Doubtfire and Lilly Savage breathed a sigh of relief.

The Sgt Danny Nightingale case:
SAS veterans' plea to PM.

The pistol was given to the soldier as a present, his supporters said

Andy McNab, Chris Ryan and two other ex-SAS members have urged the prime minister to back calls to free a soldier jailed for possessing a pistol he said was given as a "war gift".

Lt Col Richard Williams, Col Tim Collins, Mr McNab and Mr Ryan have written to David Cameron about the case of Sgt Danny Nightingale, from Crewe.

Their letter says he is a victim of a "monstrous miscarriage of justice".

The soldier was detained for 18 months last week after a court martial.

Sgt Nightingale's lawyers are appealing against the military detention sentence given to him after West Mercia Police found the pistol in his Hereford barracks.

His lawyers and family say the 8mm Glock pistol, which was given to him as a gift by Iraqi soldiers he had been helping to train in 2009, was packed by colleagues for him after he had to leave Iraq quickly to help organise the funerals of two colleagues.

They say he later suffered brain damage during the year in which he had to wait to have his belongings returned and was unable to remember that the pistol was still among them.

They say he pleaded guilty to the charge after being warned by the judge in the case he could face five years' detention if found guilty in a trial.

'Completely disproportionate'

In the letter, published by The Sun on Wednesday, the four high-profile former SAS members demand immediate action from the prime minister, saying: "This shameful betrayal ruins 17 years of exemplary service - including 11 with the SAS.

"We say this prosecution should never have happened. Furthermore, we say he was bullied into a guilty plea.

"And lastly, we say the custodial sentence is completely disproportionate to the alleged crime."

They urge Mr Cameron to "exercise leadership and judgement" and release Sgt Nightingale on licence while the case is reviewed.

On Tuesday, MP Patrick Mercer said he had raised the issue with the defence secretary and had called for a "clear explanation" about what had happened, and "perhaps review the case".

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said it did not "ordinarily comment" on UK Special Forces and added it saw "no reason to change our policy on this occasion".

It added: "It would be wrong to comment on this courts martial case, its findings, convictions or sentences of the court which may be subject to appeal."

Man charged with breach of the peace after he got angry when told to stop feeding police horses sausage rolls.

A man has been hauled to court - after allegedly becoming 'threatening and abusive' when told not to feed sausage rolls to police horses.

Francis Kelly is accused of giving the pastries to the animals that led to him being arrested. Prosecutors allege he behaved in a 'threatening or abusive manner' after attempting to feed the horses the meaty treats.

The 41-year-old will now stand trial next year.

Francis Kelly, 41, is accused of becoming 'threatening and abusive' when
told to stop feeding police horses sausage rolls

The incident is said to have taken place in Pollokshaws Road, in Glasgow, on September 26 this year.

The breach of the peace accusation claims Kelly 'adopted an aggressive stance' towards the officers in charge of the horses when told to put the sausage rolls away.

It is not known how Kelly, of the city’s Govanhill area, first came into contact with the horses.

Kelly denies the charge and will return to Glasgow’s Justice of the Peace court next February for trial.

Glasgow  Court where Kelly is due to appear again in February

He was unavailable for comment regarding the bizarre claims, but a source close to the case said he would be fighting the charge.

The insider added: 'His view is simply that he thought the horses looked hungry, daft as that sounds.'

In another bizarre horse-related case in 2005, Oxford University student Sam Brown was arrested after asking a police officer: 'Excuse me, do your realise your horse is gay?'

The case was due to go to court after Mr Brown refused to pay an £80 fine.

But the case was dropped by the CPS.

‘He’s served his time’ – fire-raiser Mike Watson back in Labour Party after jail term

DISGRACED former Labour MSP and MP Lord Mike Watson has been allowed to rejoin the party despite serving a jail sentence for fire-raising.

The peer has been readmitted to Labour after the party’s ruling national executive committee opted not to block the former Glasgow politician’s application to rejoin.

Watson, who served as a tourism minister in the Scottish Government under Jack McConnell, was handed a 16-month jail term after he was convicted of setting fire to curtains at Edinburgh’s Prestonfield House Hotel during a political awards ceremony in 2004.

The blaze was reported to have caused £4,500 worth of damage.

He served eight months of the sentence and was expelled from the Labour Party, after which he sat as an independent or crossbench member of the House of Lords.

However, he has now been handed back the Labour whip in the Lords as well as being
allowed to rejoin the party in London, where he now lives.

A Labour Party spokesman confirmed that Watson, who was appointed to the Lords in 1997 when his Westminster seat was abolished, “had not applied to join the Scottish Labour Party” but refused to comment on the former minister’s readmission in England.

Watson, who was elected as an MSP in the first round of Scottish Parliament elections in 1999, was allowed to reapply to join Labour five years after being expelled in line with party rules.

Senior Labour peer Lord George Foulkes said that he was “strongly in favour” of allowing Watson back into the party’s ranks and said that he had spoken on his behalf when the decision was taken to readmit him.

Lord Foulkes said: “I went to the national executive committee to speak on his behalf. He’s served his time and we have got to have some sense of forgiveness.

“He’s a very active member of the House of Lords and makes a lot of contributions to debates. He suffered by losing his job and going to prison, so he shouldn’t be punished forever.”

However, Watson, who was first elected as an MP in 1989 at the Glasgow Central by-election, was criticised by SNP MSP James Dornan for sitting in the Lords when he had been forced to leave the Scottish Parliament in 2005 because of his conviction.

He said: “The fact that Labour have quietly readmitted a convicted fire-raiser is an insult to all the people whose lives Mike Watson endangered, and shows how little regard Labour have for the electorate.

“Lord Watson rightly had to leave the Scottish Parliament because of what he did – yet he is still sitting, unelected, in the House of Lords making decisions for Scotland.

“This unbelievable contempt for democracy from Labour shows exactly why polls show so few Scots trust Westminster to act in Scotland’s best interests.”

The British exorcists: How people are paying thousands of pounds to quack 'healers' because it's more acceptable to be possessed than to have a mental illness

Exorcisms are being performed on Asians across the UK as a method of treatment for mental illnesses such as bi-polar disease, epilepsy and schizophrenia, an investigation has found.

Hundreds of British Asians are operating as healers, blaming the supernatural for mental health problems and charging sometimes thousands of pounds a session to remove evil spirits from bodies believed to be possessed.

An exorcist operating in east London has said the demons can ‘deceive doctors’ and research by BBC’s Newsnight has found that some communities are finding it more acceptable to be possessed than mentally ill.

Exorcism: Mudasar Khan, pictured, believes a Jinn is causing his panic attacks and depression. An exorcism is pictured being performed where the exorcist reads passages from the Qur'an

The evil spirit – commonly known as a Jinn in Asian communities – is removed by a healer reading passages from the Qur'an.

There is a theological grounding for Muslim's belief in evil spirits as the concept of Jinn is in the Qur’an – though what Jin actually is, is not universally agreed upon.

An exorcism is the religious practice of evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person which they are believed to have possessed.

Cops on pension back in top jobs

Fury at £10m on roles after retirement

Cash fears ... Sinclair

FURY erupted last night after it emerged retired cops on huge pensions are being RE-HIRED in big-money roles.

Millions of pounds of taxpayers’ cash is being spent on employing ex-cops in civilian posts after they quit the force at 50.

It means they get their pensions AND salaries of up to £55,000 from the public purse.

Almost a third of Lothian and Borders Police’s 1,110 civilian staff are former cops.

And across Scotland’s eight forces, it is believed the practice could be costing up to £10MILLION a year. The Lothian and Strathclyde forces alone have spent over £5million taking ex-officers back on.

Eight retired Strathclyde cops, including former superintendents who quit on salaries of over £70,000, now earn over £30,000 a year in new jobs.

But critics hit out at the revelations last night. Matthew Sinclair, of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, blasted: “Police pensions cost taxpayers a fortune.

“If so many officers can still work and double-dip with pensions and a salary, it suggests the retirement age is too low.”

Scottish Tory chief whip John Lamont said: “Times are tough and we need to make sure taxpayers’ money is used wisely.

“There’s no harm in utilising ex-officers’ experience, but it’s crucial we don’t allow it to become open to abuse.”

Dinosaurs may have become extinct 'earlier'

Dinosaurs vanished earlier than previously thought and "within a gnat's eyebrow" of the cataclysmic meteor impact blamed for their extinction, say scientists.

Corrected dates for both events suggest they occurred almost at the same time, around 66 million years ago.

Previous studies have indicated that the impact pre-dated the death of the dinosaurs by as much as 300,000 years.

The disaster was probably the "final straw" for the dinosaurs but may not have been the only reason why the reptiles which ruled the world for more than 150 million years died out, scientists believe.

A 110-mile crater in the Caribbean off the coast of Mexico marks the spot where a six-mile-wide object, either an asteroid or comet, smashed into the Earth.

A meteor crater in the southern Peruvian town of Carangas.

Clues to the event remain in the form of iridium-enriched dust, glassy spheres and shocked quartz that was spread around the planet.

Scientists used new radioactive dating techniques to determine both the date of the impact and that of the dinosaurs' extinction.

Dinosaurs thought to have vanished earlier than previously believed.

The research, published in the journal Science, shows they occurred within 33,000 years of each other.

Lead scientist Professor Paul Renne, from the University of California at Berkeley, US, said:

The impact was clearly the final straw that pushed Earth past the tipping point. We have shown that these events are synchronous to within a gnat's eyebrow, and therefore the impact clearly played a major role in extinctions, but it probably wasn't just the impact.

These precursory phenomena made the global ecosystem much more sensitive to even small triggers, so that what otherwise might have been a fairly minor effect shifted the ecosystem into a new state.

The impact was the coupe-de-grace.

Dramatic climate fluctuations over the previous million years, including long cold snaps, may have brought many creatures to the brink of extinction before the meteor struck, he added.

The researchers also concluded that the Earth's atmospheric carbon cycle returned to normal within about 5,000 years of the impact. In contrast, it took between one and two million years for the oceans to recover.

Man convicted of trying to feed Greggs gammon roll to police horse

Roll: Francis Kelly fed a Greggs ham roll to a Glasgow police horse© Dylan Ashe

A man has been found guilty of breaching the peace by trying to feed a ham roll to a police horse.

Francis Kelly claimed he was petting mounted police horses blocking a footpath when one of them snatched his lunch - which he was adamant was a Greggs sausage roll - from his hand.

At a trial at Glasgow Justice of the Peace Court on Friday, the mounted police officers involved in the incident in the city's south side said that they warned him to stop trying to feed the horses the "meat-based product" because they were vegetarian.

He was fined £200 but he is unable to pay and will instead serve the alternative sentence, seven days in prison.

Justice of the Peace Eleanor Lafferty found Kelly guilty of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, shouting and swearing and adopting an aggressive stance towards PC Stewart Coulter and PC Victoria McEwan on a footpath between Victoria Road and Pollokshaws Road in Govanhill.

PC Coulter told the court that Kelly repeatedly ignored his instructions to stop trying to feed the horses what he believed was a gammon roll. Kelly had originally been charged with attempting to feed the horses "sausage rolls" but this was amended to "a roll" during the trial, although no explanation for the difference was given.

The accused told the court he had "done nothing wrong" and that he had wanted to pet the horses because he was "happy" to see them.

"You don't see horses every day in Govanhill. I was just happy to see them," Mr Kelly said. He told the court that as he stopped to give the horses "a wee clap" with his right hand, one of them took a bite of his lunch, which he was holding in his left hand.

His lawyer Martin Lavery asked: "You bought the sausage roll for your lunch, you didn't buy the sausage roll to give it to a horse. So did the horse, in effect, steal your lunch?" Kelly replied: "It did, aye."

He stated that PC Coulter was "being aggressive because he was unhappy because the horse had eaten the sausage roll."
